Dr. Imran Syed is a distinguished Consultant Interventional Radiologist and Clinical Lead for Radiology & Interventional Radiology at Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, with over 19 years of experience in minimally invasive endovascular interventions. A graduate of St. Bartholomew’s Medical School (class of 1994), he initially trained in gastroenterology before transitioning to radiology, completing advanced specialist training at UCL and The Royal London Hospital. Dr. Syed’s notable contributions include the development of the “Basildon Protocol,” a COVID‑19 imaging pathway adopted by the Royal College of Radiologists to improve patient triage and reduce mortality during the pandemic. As an academic, he is a professor at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre and Ziauddin University, serves as an editor for Chapman’s Aids to Radiological Differential Diagnosis, and founded the Radiology Resident Forum, empowering trainees worldwide to conduct research and publish under expert guidance. His leadership extends to the Interventional Radiology Society of Pakistan, and he has received 10 clinical excellence awards in recognition of his innovation, education, and impact across the radiology field

Prof. Imran Syed leads one of the most dynamic radiology & interventional radiology research endeavours in the UK, combining high‐volume clinical work with academic innovation. Based within major NHS trusts and London training sites like UCL and Imperial, he has pioneered protocols and classification systems that bridge imaging, clinical presentation, and patient outcomes—such as the Basildon Protocol for COVID‐19 triage and the SVOSTA framework for superior vena cava obstruction.His Radiology Resident Forum nurtures the next generation of radiologists, giving students and trainees exposure to international publication, innovative research methods, and leadership in medical imaging science. It is this blending of clinical excellence, research output, education, and system‐wide impact that positions his department among the leading radiology research centres in London.
