How It Works
Amoxicillin is a semi-synthetic aminopenicillin belonging to the beta-lactam class of antibiotics.
It exerts bactericidal action by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell wall mucopeptides,
essential for bacterial growth and survival. Effective against a wide range of Gram-positive and
Gram-negative bacteria.
Usage and Safety
Dosage:
Amoxicillin 125 mg
Dosage to be determined by physician based on age, weight, and infection severity.
Side Effects:
 Neurological: Hyperkinesia, dizziness, convulsions
 Gastrointestinal: Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, hepatitis, cholestatic jaundice
 Dermatological: Rash, erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic
epidermal necrolysis, bullous and exfoliative dermatitis
 Others: Acute Generalized Exanthematous Pustulosis (AGEP), DRESS (Drug Reaction
with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms)
Drug Interactions:
 Allopurinol: Increases risk of rash
 Probenecid: Reduces renal excretion of amoxicillin
 Warfarin: May increase bleeding risk
 Tetracycline: May interfere with bactericidal effect
 Methotrexate: Increased toxicity risk due to reduced clearance
Indications
Used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, including:
 Upper and lower respiratory tract infections
 Otitis media
 Urinary tract infections
 Skin and soft tissue infections
 Dental abscesses
 Helicobacter pylori-associated gastric ulcers (as part of combination therapy)
Contraindications
 Known allergy to amoxicillin, penicillins, or any excipients in the formulation
 History of serious allergic reaction (e.g., anaphylaxis) to any beta-lactam antibiotic
Precautions
 Screen for penicillin or cephalosporin allergies before initiating therapy
 Use with caution in renal impairment
