How it Works
Tranexamic acid competitively inhibits activation of plasminogen by binding to the kringle
domain, thereby reducing the conversion of plasminogen to plasmin (fibrinolysin). Plasmin is an
enzyme responsible for degrading fibrin clots, fibrinogen, and other plasma proteins including
procoagulant factors V and VIII. Tranexamic acid also directly inhibits plasmin activity but
requires higher doses for this effect.

Indications
 Treatment of hemorrhage or risk of hemorrhage due to increased fibrinolysis or
fibrinogenolysis
When Not to Use
 Known hypersensitivity to tranexamic acid or any excipients
 Acute thromboembolic diseases (deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, cerebral
thrombosis)
 Fibrinolytic conditions following consumption coagulopathy, except in cases with
predominant fibrinolytic activation and acute severe bleeding
Precautions
 Evaluate thromboembolic risk factors before use
 Use with caution in patients with personal or family history of thromboembolic events;
administer only with strong medical indication and strict supervision
Warnings
1. Use caution in patients on oral contraceptives due to increased thrombosis risk
2. Avoid in patients with irregular menstrual bleeding until the cause is determined
3. Convulsions have been reported with tranexamic acid treatment
