How it Works:
Paracetamol provides pain relief and reduces fever. It works by acting on the central nervous
system, primarily through inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis or via an active metabolite that
may affect cannabinoid receptors. This leads to reduced perception of pain and regulation of
body temperature.
Usage and Safety
Dosage:
Paracetamol (dosage to be determined based on child’s weight and age, as directed by a
healthcare provider)
Side Effects:
May include thrombocytopenia, allergic reactions such as skin rash, angioedema, StevensJohnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, bronchospasm (especially in patients sensitive to
aspirin or NSAIDs), and liver dysfunction.
Drug Interactions:
Prolonged daily use may enhance the anticoagulant effect of warfarin and other coumarins,
increasing the risk of bleeding. Occasional use typically has no significant effect.
Indication:
Calpol Paediatric is indicated for fast and effective relief of mild to moderate pain and fever,
including symptoms associated with teething, headache, earache, sore throat, and common
infections in children.
When Not to Use:
Contraindicated in children with known hypersensitivity to paracetamol or any of the
formulation’s excipients.
Precautions
This medicine contains paracetamol. Do not use it concurrently with other products containing
paracetamol, as this may result in overdose and liver damage.
Warnings
Patients with underlying liver or kidney disease should use this medicine only under medical
supervision due to the risk of liver injury. Liver failure has been reported in patients with low
glutathione levels, including those with malnutrition, anorexia, or chronic alcohol use. In
glutathione-depleted conditions such as sepsis, paracetamol use may increase the risk of
metabolic acidosis.
