How It Works
Cefixime, like other cephalosporin antibiotics, works by binding to penicillin-binding proteins
(PBPs) located inside bacterial cell walls. This action inhibits the final stage of bacterial cell
wall synthesis, resulting in bacterial cell death (bactericidal action).
Usage and Safety
Dosage:
Cefixime Trihydrate — to be taken as prescribed by a physician based on age, weight, and
condition.
Side Effects:
 Diarrhea (discontinue if severe)
 Stool color changes
 Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dyspepsia
 Headache, dizziness, seizures
 Temporary elevations in liver enzymes (transaminases, alkaline phosphatase), jaundice
 Elevated serum amylase
Drug Interactions:
 Anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin)
 Carbamazepine
 Probenecid
Indications
Cefixime is indicated for infections caused by susceptible bacteria, such as:
 Uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs)
 Otitis media (middle ear infection)
 Pharyngitis and tonsillitis
 Acute bronchitis and chronic bronchitis exacerbations
 Uncomplicated gonorrhea (cervical or urethral)
When Not to Use
Do not use in:
 Patients with hypersensitivity to cefixime or any of its components
 Patients with known allergy to cephalosporins
Precautions
 Use with caution in patients sensitive to penicillin due to potential cross-reactivity
 Adjust dosage in patients with renal impairment
Warnings
1. Use cautiously in patients with marked renal dysfunction
2. Broad-spectrum antibiotics can disturb normal gut flora, possibly leading to
Clostridium difficile overgrowth
3. Use cautiously in those with a history of gastrointestinal disease, especially colitis
