Mechanism of Action:
Cefixime is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It works by binding to penicillinbinding proteins (PBPs) within the bacterial cell wall, inhibiting the final stage of bacterial cell
wall synthesis, leading to cell lysis and death.
Indications:
Cefixime is indicated for treatment of infections caused by susceptible microorganisms in:
 Uncomplicated urinary tract infections
 Otitis media
 Pharyngitis and tonsillitis
 Acute bronchitis and acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis
 Uncomplicated gonorrhea (cervical/urethral)
Dosage Form:
Suspension (100 mg/5 mL)
Common Side Effects:
 Diarrhea (may require discontinuation if severe)
 Changes in stool color
 Nausea, vomiting
 Abdominal pain, dyspepsia
 Headache, dizziness, seizures
 Elevated liver enzymes, jaundice
 Elevated serum amylase
Drug Interactions:
Use with caution when co-administered with:
 Anticoagulants
 Carbamazepine
 Probenecid
Contraindications:
 Known hypersensitivity to cefixime or other cephalosporins
Precautions:
 Use with caution in penicillin-sensitive patients due to partial cross-allergenicity.
 Administer cautiously in patients with renal impairment.
 Use cautiously in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal disease, especially
colitis.
 Broad-spectrum antibiotics can disrupt normal gut flora, leading to clostridial
overgrowth.
