How It Works
Cefixime, like other cephalosporins, works by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs)
inside the bacterial cell wall. This inhibits the final stage of bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading
to bacterial cell death.
Usage And Safety
Dosage: Cefixime (as prescribed)
Side Effects:
 Diarrhea (discontinue if severe)
 Changes in stool color
 Nausea, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, vomiting
 Headache, dizziness, seizures
 Transient rises in liver enzymes and jaundice
 Elevated serum amylase

Indication
Treatment of infections caused by susceptible microorganisms, including:
 Uncomplicated urinary tract infections
 Otitis media
 Pharyngitis and tonsillitis
 Acute bronchitis and exacerbations of chronic bronchitis
 Uncomplicated gonorrhea (cervical/urethral)
When Not to Use
Contraindicated in patients with:
 Hypersensitivity to cefixime or any ingredients
 Known allergy to cephalosporins
Precautions
Use with caution in patients sensitive to penicillins due to partial cross-allergenicity between
penicillins and cephalosporins.
Warnings
1. Use cautiously in patients with severe renal impairment.
2. Broad-spectrum antibiotics may alter gut flora and allow clostridia overgrowth.
3. Prescribe with caution in patients with history of gastrointestinal disease, especially
colitis.
