Mechanism of Action:
Cefixime, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic, acts by binding to penicillin-binding
proteins (PBPs) within the bacterial cell wall. This inhibits the final stage of bacterial cell wall
synthesis, resulting in cell lysis and death of the pathogen.
Indications:
Cefixime is indicated for infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including:
 Uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs)
 Otitis media
 Pharyngitis and tonsillitis
 Acute bronchitis and acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis
 Uncomplicated gonorrhea (cervical/urethral)
Dosage Form:
Suspension (100 mg/5 mL)

Side Effects:
 Gastrointestinal: Diarrhea (discontinue if severe), nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain,
dyspepsia, stool discoloration
 Neurological: Headache, dizziness, seizures
 Hepatic: Temporary increase in liver enzymes (transaminases, alkaline phosphatase),
jaundice
 Pancreatic: Elevated serum amylase
Drug Interactions:
Caution is advised when taken with:
 Anticoagulants
 Carbamazepine
 Probenecid
Contraindications:
Do not use in:
 Patients with hypersensitivity to cefixime or any component of this formulation
 Patients allergic to cephalosporins
Precautions:
 Use cautiously in patients with a history of penicillin allergy due to possible crossreactivity
 Monitor and adjust dose in renal impairment
 Avoid or use with caution in patients with a history of colitis or other gastrointestinal
disease
Warnings:
1. Renal Function: Monitor in patients with impaired renal function
2. Gut Flora Disruption: May cause overgrowth of Clostridium difficile
3. GI Risk: Increased risk in individuals with preexisting gastrointestinal conditions
