Mechanism of Action
Clarithromycin binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible bacteria, inhibiting protein
synthesis and thereby preventing bacterial growth.
Dosage
 Active Ingredient: Clarithromycin

o Renal and hepatic function

Drug Interactions
Avoid Concomitant Use With:
 Cisapride, Pimozide, Astemizole, Terfenadine – Risk of cardiac arrhythmias
 Ergot Alkaloids (e.g., ergotamine, dihydroergotamine) – Risk of ergot toxicity
 Oral Midazolam – Risk of excessive sedation
 HMG-CoA Reductase Inhibitors (Statins) – Risk of myopathy/rhabdomyolysis
Contraindications
 Known hypersensitivity to clarithromycin or any macrolide
 Concurrent use with interacting drugs listed above
Precautions
 Use with caution in pregnant women, especially during the first trimester
 Long-term use may promote growth of non-susceptible organisms (bacteria or fungi)
 Monitor and manage superinfections appropriately

1. Renal Impairment:
