•    Post-myocardial infarction (to improve survival in patients with left ventricular dysfunction)

How It Works:
Valsartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB). It works by:
•    Blocking the binding of angiotensin II to the AT1 receptor in vascular smooth muscle and adrenal gland
•    Reducing vasoconstriction and aldosterone secretion
•    The action is independent of how angiotensin II is synthesized

Dosage:
•    Valsartan (dose as prescribed by a physician based on condition and patient profile)

Side Effects:
Common:
•    Viral infections
•    Neutropenia
•    Hyperkalemia
•    Dizziness, vertigo, postural hypotension

Use caution or avoid with:
•    Lithium
•    NSAIDs (including COX-2 inhibitors and high-dose aspirin)
•    Rifampin, ciclosporin, ritonavir (affect drug transporters)
•    Aliskiren (in diabetics or renally impaired patients)

Indications:
•    Treatment of Hypertension
•    Management of Heart Failure (Class II–IV)
•    Improving survival post-myocardial infarction in patients with LV dysfunction

When Not to Use:
Contraindicated in:
•    Hypersensitivity to valsartan or any excipients
•    Severe hepatic impairment, biliary cirrhosis, cholestasis
•    Pregnancy (2nd and 3rd trimesters)
•    Concomitant use with aliskiren in patients with:
o    Diabetes
o    Renal impairment (GFR < 60 mL/min/1.73 m²)

Precautions:
•    Not effective in patients with primary hyperaldosteronism
•    Use cautiously in hepatic impairment (without cholestasis)

Warnings:

Avoid potassium-sparing diuretics, potassium supplements, or potassium-rich salt substitutes. Monitor serum potassium levels regularly.
đź”´ Warning 2:
In patients with bilateral renal artery stenosis or a single kidney, valsartan may affect renal function. Monitor serum creatinine and urea.

Use caution in mild to moderate liver disease; dose adjustment may be required.
