 Treatment and prevention of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
 Healing of erosive reflux esophagitis
 Long-term maintenance to prevent esophagitis relapse

How It Works:
Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It works by irreversibly inhibiting the H⁺/K⁺
ATPase enzyme system in gastric parietal cells, thereby reducing the production of gastric acid.
This effect is dose-dependent and suppresses both basal and stimulated acid secretion.

Common:
 Headache
 Nausea, vomiting

Uncommon:

Indications:
Risek (Omeprazole) is used for:
 GERD treatment
 Healing and maintenance of erosive esophagitis
 Symptom relief in acid reflux disorders
When Not to Use:
 Known allergy or hypersensitivity to omeprazole or similar compounds (substituted
benzimidazoles)
 Concurrent use with nelfinavir (a contraindicated drug interaction)
Precautions:
 Long-term use may reduce vitamin B12 absorption due to decreased stomach acid,
especially in patients with existing low B12 levels or risk factors
 Monitor magnesium and calcium levels during prolonged therapy
Warnings:
1. Rule out gastric malignancy before initiating therapy for gastric ulcers — symptom relief
may mask the condition.
2. Fracture risk may be increased with prolonged high-dose PPI use (>1 year), particularly in
older adults or those with osteoporosis risk.
3. Dose adjustments may be necessary in hepatic impairment due to increased drug exposure
and longer half-life.
