How It Works:
Sucralfate is a complex of aluminium hydroxide and sucrose octasulfate.
 In the acidic environment of the stomach, it breaks down and forms an anionic
compound.
 This binds to the base of ulcers, forming a protective barrier against:
o Pepsin
o Bile acids
o Gastric acid diffusion
 This promotes healing and symptom relief.
Dosage:
 Active ingredient: Sucralfate
 As directed by a physician
 Typically taken before meals and at bedtime
 Best taken on an empty stomach

Drug Interactions:
Sucralfate may interfere with the absorption of the following drugs:
 Cimetidine, Ranitidine
 Digoxin, Phenytoin
 Ketoconazole, Tetracycline, Fluoroquinolones
 Levothyroxine, Theophylline, Quinidine, Possibly Warfarin
Space dosing by at least 2 hours if co-administered.
Indications:
 Treatment of:
o Gastric ulcer
o Duodenal ulcer
o Chronic gastritis
o Reflux esophagitis
 Relief of symptoms like:
o Epigastric pain
o Hyperacidity
o Vomiting
 Maintenance therapy after healed duodenal ulcers (confirmed by endoscopy)
When Not to Use:
 Hypersensitivity to sucralfate or any component of the product
Precautions:
 Use with caution in patients with renal impairment or on dialysis
o Risk of aluminium accumulation
Warnings:
Warning 1:
 Aluminium toxicity may occur in patients with kidney disease
 Monitor levels of:
o Aluminium
o Phosphate
o Calcium
o Alkaline phosphatase
Warning 2:
 May worsen phosphate deficiency
 Aluminium binds to phosphate, reducing its absorption
Warning 3:
 Rare cases of bezoar formation (insoluble mass in the stomach)
 Use caution in:
o Critically ill patients
o Premature infants
o Those with delayed gastric emptying
o Patients on enteral feeds
