How it works
Urso Capsules contain ursodeoxycholic acid, a bile acid that may protect the liver by reducing
the absorption of potentially toxic bile salts.

Dosage
Ursodeoxycholic acid (as prescribed)
Side Effects
 Diarrhoea
 Itching/pruritus
 Urticaria (nettle rash)

 Pain in the stomach area or upper right abdomen (under ribs)
 Severe right-sided upper abdominal pain
 Severe worsening (decompensation) of liver tissue damage

 Colestyramine
 Colestipol
 Antacids containing aluminium hydroxide and/or smectite (aluminium oxide)
 Ciclosporin
 Budesonide
 Clofibrate

Indication
 Treatment of primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC)
 Dissolution of radiolucent gallstones in patients with a functioning gall bladder
When Not to Use
 Allergic to ursodeoxycholic acid, bile acids, or any ingredients
 Bile duct or gall bladder is swollen, painful, or blocked
 Certain types of cholesterol stones or bile pigment stones
 If advised by doctor for gall bladder removal
Urso Capsules Precautions
 If diarrhoea occurs, reduce dose
 Discontinue therapy if diarrhoea persists
Urso Capsules Warnings
1. During the first 3 months of treatment, liver function tests (ASAT/SGOT, ALAT/SGPT,
γ-GT) should be monitored every 4 weeks, then every 3 months to detect responders and
early hepatic deterioration.
2. Gall bladder imaging (oral cholecystography or ultrasound) should be done 6-10 months
after starting treatment to monitor therapeutic progress and detect gallstone calcification.
3. Do not use if gall bladder cannot be visualised on X-ray, or in cases of calcified stones,
impaired gall bladder contractility, or frequent biliary colic episodes.
