Bacterial Infections, including:
 Upper respiratory tract infections (sinusitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis,
laryngotracheobronchitis, otitis media)
 Lower respiratory tract infections (acute/chronic bronchitis, lobar pneumonia,
bronchopneumonia)
 Skin and soft tissue infections (impetigo, abscess, cellulitis, furunculosis)
 Urinary tract infections (cystitis, urethritis, pyelonephritis)
 Gastrointestinal tract infections (bacillary dysentery, enteritis, peritonitis)
How It Works:
Cephradine is a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It works by:
 Inhibiting the final transpeptidation step in peptidoglycan synthesis in bacterial cell
walls
 Binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs)
 Arresting cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial cell lysis and death

Side Effects:
 Gastrointestinal:
Glossitis, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loose stools, tenesmus, abdominal pain, colitis,
pseudomembranous colitis
 Hypersensitivity Reactions:
Mild urticaria, skin rash, edema, erythema, pruritus, joint pain, drug fever
 Hematologic:
Mild/transient eosinophilia, leukopenia, neutropenia
 Others:
Headache, dizziness, dyspnea, paresthesia, candidal overgrowth, vaginitis
Drug Interactions:
 Loop diuretics: May increase nephrotoxicity
 Probenecid: Inhibits renal excretion of cephradine, increasing its levels
 Aminoglycosides: Increased nephrotoxicity risk
 Anticoagulants: May enhance anticoagulant effect — monitor coagulation parameters
Indication:
Treatment of susceptible bacterial infections, particularly:
 Respiratory tract
 Skin and soft tissue
 Urinary tract
 Gastrointestinal tract
When Not to Use:
 Known hypersensitivity to cephradine or any excipients
 Known allergy to cephalosporins
Precautions:
 Use cautiously in patients with penicillin allergy due to cross-sensitivity
 Adjust dose in patients with renal impairment
Warnings:
1. Renal Impairment:
Dosage adjustment necessary; monitor renal function.
2. False Glucose Test Results:
May cause false-positive glucose in urine with Benedict’s, Fehling’s solution, or
Clinitest.
3. Superinfections:
Long-term use may lead to overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi.
