How It Works:
Salbutamol is a selective beta2 adrenoceptor agonist. It acts on beta2 adrenoceptors in bronchial
muscles, providing short-acting bronchodilation (4 to 6 hours) to relieve reversible airway
obstruction.
Usage and Safety
Dosage: Salbutamol
Side Effects:
 Immune system disorders (very rare): Hypersensitivity reactions including angioedema,
urticaria, bronchospasm, hypotension, and collapse.
 Metabolism and nutrition disorders (rare): Hypokalaemia (potentially serious).
 Nervous system disorders (very common): Tremor; Common: Headache; Very rare:
Hyperactivity.
 Cardiac disorders (common): Tachycardia, palpitations; Rare: Cardiac arrhythmias such
as atrial fibrillation, supraventricular tachycardia, extrasystoles.
 Vascular disorders (rare): Peripheral vasodilatation.
 Musculoskeletal disorders (common): Muscle cramps; Very rare: Feeling of muscle
tension.
Drug Interactions:
May interact with propranolol, monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), digoxin, theophylline or
aminophylline, prednisolone, diuretics (e.g., frusemide), insulin, metformin, and glibenclamide.
Indications
Relief of bronchospasm in bronchial asthma, chronic bronchitis, and emphysema.
When Not to Use
Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to any component. Non-intravenous forms
should not be used to arrest uncomplicated premature labor or threatened abortion.
Precautions
 Potentially serious hypokalaemia may occur, especially with parenteral/nebulised
administration.
 Monitor serum potassium levels in patients receiving concomitant xanthine derivatives,
steroids, diuretics, or with hypoxia.
Warnings
1. Asthma management should follow a stepwise approach with clinical and lung function
monitoring.
2. Increasing use of short-acting beta2 agonists indicates worsening asthma control; reassess
therapy and consider corticosteroids.
3. If usual relief diminishes or duration shortens, do not increase dosage—seek medical
advice immediately.
