How It Works
 Salbutamol: Selective beta2 adrenoceptor agonist providing short-acting (4 to 6 hours)
bronchodilation by relaxing bronchial muscles.
 Guaiphenesin: An expectorant used to relieve cough and congestion related to common
cold, bronchitis, and other respiratory illnesses.
Usage and Safety
Dosage: Guaiphenesin, Salbutamol
Side Effects:
 Immune system disorders (very rare): Hypersensitivity reactions such as angioedema,
urticaria, bronchospasm, hypotension, collapse.
 Metabolism and nutrition disorders (rare): Hypokalaemia (potentially serious due to beta2
agonist therapy).
 Nervous system disorders: Very common - tremor; common - headache; very rare -
hyperactivity.
 Cardiac disorders: Common - tachycardia, palpitations; rare - arrhythmias including atrial
fibrillation, supraventricular tachycardia, extrasystoles.
 Vascular disorders (rare): Peripheral vasodilatation.
 Musculoskeletal and connective tissue disorders: Common - muscle cramps; very rare -
muscle tension.
Drug Interactions:
Possible interactions with propranolol, monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), digoxin,
theophylline or aminophylline, prednisolone, diuretics (e.g., frusemide), insulin, metformin, and
glibenclamide.
Indications
 Relief of bronchospasm in bronchial asthma, chronic bronchitis, and emphysema
(Salbutamol).
 Expectorant to loosen mucus and ease cough (Guaiphenesin).
When Not to Use
 Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to any component.
 Non-intravenous forms must not be used to arrest uncomplicated premature labor or
threatened abortion.
Precautions
 Hypokalaemia risk due to beta2 agonist therapy, especially in acute severe asthma,
patients on xanthine derivatives, steroids, diuretics, or hypoxia.
 Monitor serum potassium levels where appropriate.
Warnings
1. Asthma management should follow a stepwise program with clinical and lung function
monitoring.
2. Long-term use of sugar-containing formulations like this syrup may increase risk of
dental caries.
3. If usual symptom relief diminishes or duration shortens, do not increase dosage — seek
medical advice promptly.
