How It Works
Ketotifen is an antihistamine that works by inhibiting substances in the body that cause
inflammation, reducing the harmful effects of histamine.
Usage and Safety
Dosage: Ketotifen
Side Effects:
 Agitation, irritability
 Insomnia (inability to sleep)
 Nervousness, dizziness
 Burning sensation when passing urine, frequent and urgent urination (cystitis)
 Dry mouth
 Drowsiness, somnolence
 Weight increase
 Headache, vomiting, nausea, diarrhea
Drug Interactions:
 Oral diabetes medications
 Asthma medications
 Medicines for sleeplessness, anxiety, or depression
 Other antihistamines used for allergic reactions (itching, rash, runny nose)
 Anticoagulants (blood thinners)
Indications
Used to treat allergic conditions such as rhinitis and other anti-allergic purposes.
When Not to Use
 Allergy to ketotifen or any ingredients in the syrup
 Epilepsy
 Taking oral diabetes medicines
 Breastfeeding
Precautions
 During the first few days, you may experience slowed reactions or drowsiness—even if
not overtly sleepy. Avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how the
medicine affects you.
 Your doctor may reduce the dose if reactions are impaired.
Warnings
1. Ketotifen may increase effects of sedatives, antihistamines, antidepressants, anxiolytics,
anticoagulants, and alcohol.
2. Should be used cautiously in patients with epilepsy as it may lower the seizure threshold;
convulsions are very rare but reported.
3. Risk of thrombocytopenia when taken with oral antidiabetic drugs (biguanides); avoid
simultaneous use.
