How It Works
Albendazole is a benzimidazole carbamate with anthelmintic and antiprotozoal activity against
intestinal and tissue parasites. It inhibits tubulin polymerisation in helminths, disrupting their
metabolism and energy supply, which immobilizes and kills the parasites. It has vermicidal,
ovicidal, and larvicidal properties.
Usage and Safety

 Gastrointestinal disturbances
 Headache, dizziness
 Rash, fever
 Rarely reversible alopecia
 Hematological changes
 Liver enzyme changes
Drug Interactions:
 Praziquantel increases plasma levels of albendazole’s active metabolite.
 Ritonavir, phenytoin, carbamazepine, and phenobarbital may reduce plasma levels of
albendazole sulfoxide, potentially decreasing efficacy, especially in systemic helminth
infections. Monitoring and possible dosage adjustments may be needed.
Indications
Treatment of single or mixed intestinal parasitic infections, including:
 Ascaris lumbricoides (roundworm)
 Trichuris trichiura (whipworm)
 Enterobius vermicularis (pinworm/threadworm)
 Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus (hookworms)
 Taenia species (tapeworm)
 Strongyloides stercoralis
 Giardia infections in children
When Not to Use
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to albendazole or its constituents.
Precautions
 Caution in patients performing skilled tasks due to possible dizziness.
Warnings
1. Leucopenia may occur with prolonged use beyond recommended duration.
2. Treatment may uncover pre-existing neurocysticercosis, causing neurological symptoms
like seizures or increased intracranial pressure; steroid and anticonvulsant therapy may be
required.
3. Not recommended in patients with hereditary problems of galactose intolerance, lactase
deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption.
