How It Works
Azithromycin works by suppressing bacterial protein synthesis. It binds to the 50S ribosomal
subunit and inhibits peptide translocation, acting bacteriostatically.
Usage and Safety
Dosage: Azithromycin
Side Effects:
 Sudden wheeziness, difficulty breathing
 Swelling of eyelids, face, or lips
 Rash or itching, especially widespread
 Severe or prolonged diarrhea, possibly with blood or mucus (may indicate serious bowel
inflammation)
 Severe skin rash with redness and flaking
 Rapid or irregular heartbeat, low blood pressure
 Serious skin reactions including blistering of skin, mouth, eyes, genitals (StevensJohnson Syndrome)

 Ergot or ergotamine
 Warfarin

When Not to Use
 Allergy to azithromycin or any macrolide antibiotic (e.g., erythromycin, clarithromycin)
 Allergy to any ingredients in the medicine
 Allergic reactions may cause rash or wheezing
Precautions
 Report immediately if you experience abnormal heartbeat, dizziness, fainting, or muscle
weakness during treatment.
Warnings
1. Inform your doctor promptly if diarrhea or loose stools occur during or after treatment.
Avoid anti-diarrheal medication without medical advice.
2. Take azithromycin either 1 hour before meals or 2 hours after meals.
